In the near future, boxing as we know it has been replaced with a new high tech sport known as robot boxing. The guiding principle of the game is that humans no longer need to get in the ring to beat the crap out of each other. Instead, the humans are in control of robots which attempt to pulverise their opponent for the entertainment of the baying crowds. Underground bouts take place all the time, but the top players get to pit their robots against the best in a big money league known as "Real Steel.
Ex-boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a down-on-his-luck robot boxing competitor stuck in a losing streak. His debts are spiralling out of control and his reputation is in tatters as he drifts from one disastrous underground contest to another. Charlie's problems go from bad to worse when he learns that his ex-girlfriend has recently died, meaning that he is the lawful custodian of an eleven year old son named Max (Dakota Goyo) that he has neglected since birth. Initially, Charlie wants nothing to do with the kid and the kid wants nothing to do with Charlie. Forced into each other's company, a bond gradually develops between the pair of them. Max begins to take a keen interest in the world of robot boxing while Charlie slowly grows a sense of fatherly responsibility. When Max accidentally discovers a wrecked robot in a scrapyard, he sets about restoring it and he and Charlie suddenly find themselves sharing a mutual goal in life. The revived robot – known as Atom – provides them with an upturn in fortunes, winning enough fights and admiration to get a shot at the Real Steel league… and eventually a bout against the greatest robot of them all, the invincible demolition machine Zeus.
The movie sticks to standard conventions throughout. Anyone who has seen any David vs Goliath sports movie will be able to predict where this one is going from the very early stages. Nevertheless director Shawn Levy manages to inject the film with the same likability that he brought to Night At The Museum, embellishing the obvious storyline with warm heartedness, fast pacing and rather exciting fight sequences. A few factors hold the film back somewhat. Take the character of Max, for example… acted ably enough by Goyo, but scripted as such a cocky, arrogant brat that viewers might find a small part of them secretly desiring to see him eating humble pie. He's not a kid that an audience can easily root for. Then there's the rise of Atom from discarded junkyard wreck to title contender, all dealt with in far too cursory a manner which makes the second half of the film oddly uninvolving. Overall, though, Real Steel just about deserves a thumbs up. Its flaws are plain and clear for all to see, but the general handling is slick enough and the whole package sufficiently enjoyable to make it worth a look.
